Paediatric Dermatology
At Adult and Paediatric dermatology, Dr Rochelle Gild enjoys treating babies, children and teenagers with skin concerns.
Babies and toddlers may need to see a dermatologist for conditions such as birth marks, eczema and more complicated genetic skin diseases. Some birth marks can be a sign of underlying problems and diseases, and some may need to be treated for cosmetic reasons. Sometimes the best treatment can be excluding anything dangerous and then providing reassurance.
Around twenty percent of babies, toddlers and young children in Australia suffer from atopic dermatitis or eczema. The good news is that only 1% of adults are affected. This means that over time, most children will grow out of their eczema. Eczema can be a very difficult problem for children causing itch, infections, discomfort, stress, poor sleep and poor school performance. It can affect the entire family as a sleep deprived child inevitably means a sleep deprived mum and dad. Eczema can be a very satisfying condition to treat, as it can be life changing for both the child and their family.
Teenagers often present to dermatologists with acne. In Australia 99% of teenagers get pimples from time to time. In teenagers and young adults mild acne can be very distressing affecting self esteem and self confidence. Severe acne can lead to long term scarring and can also be associated with other health problems such as bowel disease and joint problems. The great news is that acne is a highly treatable condition.
